Strengthening Measured Fishing Policies, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Holds a Fish Stock Assessment Workshop at Hasanuddin University

The four-day intensive program was officially opened by Syahril Abd Raup, Director of Fish Resource Management (PSDI), representing the Director General of Capture Fisheries. The workshop is attended by 21 participants, all academics in the field of fisheries, representing various universities proposed directly by the Fisheries Management Units (UPP) of Indonesia’s Fisheries Management Areas (WPPNRI) 713, 714, and 718.

In his remarks, Syahril emphasized the urgency of accurate data in national fisheries governance. Availability of data and information related to fish stock resources is crucial. This data serves as the primary foundation for the government in formulating and establishing well-targeted marine and fisheries policies.

MARITIMEPOSTS.COM – The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) continues to strengthen the foundation of data and scientific research to support sustainable fisheries management policies.

As a concrete step, KKP organized the Opening of the Fish Stock Assessment Workshop, held at the Meeting Room of the Faculty of Marine Science and Fisheries (FIKP) at Hasanuddin University (Unhas), Makassar, on Tuesday (April 7, 2026).

Also present was Mohamad Abdi, Expert Staff to the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries for the Protection of Fishermen and Fishing Vessel Crews.

In his remarks, Syahril emphasized the urgency of accurate data in national fisheries governance.

“Availability of data and information related to fish stock resources is crucial. This data serves as the primary foundation for the government in formulating and establishing well-targeted marine and fisheries policies,” he stated.

During the four-day workshop, participants will receive comprehensive training on fish stock assessment protocols in accordance with standards set by the Komisi Nasional Pengkajian Stok Sumber Daya Ikan (Komnas KAJISKAN).

The main objective of the program is to ensure that, after the workshop, participants possess strong technical and analytical capabilities to independently conduct stock assessments based on Komnas KAJISKAN standards.

Also attending the event was Indra Jaya, Chairman of Komnas KAJISKAN, who stressed that science must remain at the forefront of natural resource management.

“Scientific research results derived from standardized stock assessment methods must be the primary basis for every fisheries management policy decision in Indonesia,” he affirmed.

Syahril further explained that ongoing improvements in fisheries management are closely linked to KKP’s strategic programs, including the development of the Kampung Nelayan Merah Putih (KNMP).

“The KNMP development policy is not only about infrastructure but also directly related to improving fisheries governance. Moving forward, fish data systems will become more robust, as all fishermen’s catches in KNMP locations will be systematically recorded,” added Mohamad Abdi.

Separately, the Director General of Capture Fisheries also emphasized the importance of synergy among all stakeholders to accelerate the implementation of the Measured Fishing Policy.

Within this policy framework, data availability is essential, particularly in determining fish stock status and setting the Allowable Catch (JTB). Scientifically based JTB data will then be transparently distributed into fair and sustainable fishing quotas.

Through this workshop, KKP hopes that collaboration between the government and academia will continue to strengthen, ensuring that every policy issued can safeguard marine ecological sustainability while improving the welfare of fishing communities.
