YKAN and UNPAD Collaborate on Digital Innovation for Fisheries Data Collection

MARITIMEPOSTS.COM— The Indonesia Nature Conservation Foundation (YKAN), in collaboration with the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences at Padjadjaran University (UNPAD), has initiated the development of an Android-based Crew-Operated Data Recording System (CODRS) application as part of efforts to strengthen fisheries data collection through a faster, more efficient, and more accurate system.

The collaboration was officially launched during an inaugural meeting held at the UNPAD campus in Bandung on Tuesday (August 4, 2026).

The application development forms part of a broader cooperation agreement covering education, research, and the advancement of marine conservation science and technology.

Through this partnership, the CODRS system—which has traditionally relied on manual data collection—will be transformed into an Android-based digital platform that enables fish catch data to be recorded directly in the field.

Since its introduction in 2014, CODRS has become one of YKAN’s key innovations in supporting data-driven fisheries management in Indonesia. The system generates information that is utilized by government agencies, local communities, industry stakeholders, and other partners to formulate sustainable fisheries management policies.

YKAN’s CODRS program also plays a significant role in supporting the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF) and the National Commission for Fish Stock Assessment (Komnas Kajiskan). Through fisheries data collection and analysis, YKAN contributes to stock assessments of deep-water snapper and grouper species across Indonesia’s 11 Fisheries Management Areas (FMAs).

The resulting information serves as an important scientific basis for management recommendations and the sustainable allocation of fishery resources.

Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences at Padjadjaran University, Dr. Sunarto, S.Pi., M.Si., stated that the partnership reflects the implementation of the university’s Tri Dharma principles, which encompass education, research, and community service.

In this context, universities contribute by developing technological innovations that address real-world challenges in marine resource management.

“This collaboration brings together the strengths of academic research and technology development with YKAN’s extensive field implementation experience. We hope the Android-based CODRS application will provide an adaptive, user-friendly solution capable of generating high-quality data to support fisheries management in Indonesia,” he said.

The meeting also discussed the design of a system integrated with artificial intelligence and fisheries information technologies.

Through the development of the Android-based CODRS application, YKAN and UNPAD aim to make fisheries data collection more effective and efficient.

The initiative also strengthens the use of digital technology in supporting sustainable fisheries management in Indonesia while expanding the role of fishers as primary data collectors in the field.

YKAN Marine Program Director Muhammad Ilman emphasized that the digital transformation of CODRS represents an important step toward improving both the quality and speed of fisheries data collection.

“Data is the foundation of sustainable fisheries management. By developing an Android-based CODRS together with Padjadjaran University, we aim to accelerate the recording process, improve data accuracy, and facilitate information integration, thereby supporting science-based decision-making by government institutions and other stakeholders,” he said.
