maritimeposts.com/ – Makan Bergizi Gratis (MBG), or Free Nutritious Meals, is a flagship social program of President Prabowo Subianto, launched as a cornerstone of his vision for a “Golden Indonesia 2045.” The initiative aims to improve the health and human capital of future generations while contributing to national economic growth

Prabowo reframed the initiative from “free school lunch” to “free nutritious meals” to emphasize its focus on balanced, healthy food suitable for schoolchildren and pregnant or nursing mothers. He called it a strategic investment for future generations:  “If our children lack nutrition, they will struggle to compete—whether in schools, universities, or even physically demanding jobs”

Initiatives from the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries

The Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program is one of the Indonesian government’s strategic initiatives to realize the President’s vision of a “Golden Indonesia 2045.”

Launched as part of the Eight Asta Cita Missions—specifically, the mission to strengthen human resources—this program aims to ensure that every citizen, particularly children, has access to balanced, quality nutrition.

Morotai Island, one of Indonesia’s outermost small islands, is blessed with rich marine resources. While many regions face challenges in securing sufficient supplies of eggs and meat, Morotai has a unique advantage: fish. Fresh fish and a variety of processed fish products can easily serve as an alternative source of animal protein, making them a natural fit for the MBG menu on the island.

Recognizing this potential, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries is working hand in hand with the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs (Kemenko Pangan) and the National Nutrition Agency (BNG) to make Morotai a model for fisheries-based nutrition programs.

“The Dae Majiko Fishing Port has been officially designated as the main MBG kitchen for the island. This strategic hub will ensure that the abundant fish supply from local fishermen serves not only export markets but also meets the nutritional needs of the local population through the MBG program,” said Ady Candra Director of Fishing Port of the Directorate of Capture Fisheries of the MMAF of Indonesia.

With this integration of local fisheries into the national nutrition agenda, Morotai is set to play a vital role in ensuring that Indonesia’s maritime wealth directly contributes to healthier communities—paving the way toward the nation’s 2045 golden milestone.
